Elfreda, I have just sat with a cross-section of Hindu leaders from around the country. Its not me thats saying they're outraged - its them.

But you are right, there are enough facts in this case to campaign for changes in the RSPCA's future behaviour with all pet-lovers; and for a change in the law.

I don't think the argument that this is an "assault on the Hindu faith" is a good one to use in this campaign. For one thing, it is an exaggeration and for another, people aren't happy nowadays that religions and faiths should be respected just because they are 'religions and faiths'. We have to show why our beliefs should be respected. I don't think all this 'anger' and 'outrage' on that score, will win anyone's heart.

There's enough material in the bare facts of the case; the deception by the RSPCA, the evidence that Gangotri was not in bad pain, the very clear fact that the cows at the Manor are well and lovingly taken care of, under the auspices of a trained vet or two. These are the things, in my opinion, which will win public support. As well as the hypocrisy of killing this one cow, when so many farm animals are cruelly treated all over the country.

With reference to the recent publicity about the unpopular, vegetarian entrance requirement for the new Hindu school, this resolution would carry more weight if those whom the signatories represented were not eating animals on a regular basis. Is this not also "a fundamental assault on the principles of our faith" ?
