Sri Lakshmi Nrsimha Karavalamba Stotram

Here are the Sanskrit and English Lyrics of Sri Lakshmi Narasimha Karavalamba Stotram – the Lakshmi Nrsimha Prayer said to be composed by Adi Shankaracarya. My apologies for any imperfections in the English translation. You can compare the lyrics with the song by watching the video:

Please understand that this is for your interest only. I do not endorse the Advaita philosophy of Adi Shankaracarya as the complete understanding of Vedanta. But I found it ironic that when he really needed help, the great preacher of impersonalism called upon the help of Nrsimha.

    Pranaam Deshika ji,

Your ‘warning’ and talk of ‘irony’ of the situation in which the hymn -created by Adi Sanakara- dedicated to Lord Nrsimha, is on the expected lines; coming from a sampradaya that makes no bones about their relentless and simmering dislike (to put it mildly !) of Adi Sankara-personally- and Advaita in general, is a reaffirmation of the fact that the acrimony is not going to end anytime in the foreseeable future.

As a longtime reader of your blog and who has also appreciated your efforts in fostering understanding between different faiths, I was a tad disappointed with the explanation you thought was necessary from your point of view, before publishing the translation of the hymn.

Now, coming to the point of seeking help. If one even breezes through the pages of Adi Sankara’s early life, one would definitely find a reference to an incident where the young Sankara voluntarily walks into the mouth of a crocodile- to make his mother grant her permission for his Sanyasa Deeksha. There was no help sought. Or was the young Adi Sankara not capable, then, of producing a timeless hymn to save his life, when it became evident that the crocodile was not going to loosen its grip regardless of his mother’s decision?

The followers of ‘impersonalism’ (to borrow your term), have understood the Nrsimha Karavalamba Sthothra – over the centuries – as a blessed shloka for the mere mortals who would be frightened of horrifying situations that would confront them in ‘life’ , and not as a ‘personal’ plea of help from someone who is the incarnation of the Lord Rudra himself !

I was very heartened to see your post “Saving Grace of Adi Sankaracharya” (my apologies if I have misquoted the title ) and was hoping that a fruitful discussion would ensue that could clear the misgivings about Advaita through deliberations, but it was not to be. Of course, you are entitled to your opinion as are the Advaitins to theirs. Mutual understanding between sampradayas – within the broader framework of Sanatana Dharma – would be a harmonious addition to the richness of Sanatana Dharma. But the discussions are not to be.

I wish you every success in your spiritual journey and hope that someday that people who are in a position to influence impressionable minds of the importance of harmony between sampradayas will make a bold foray in that direction.

    Best regards
